Introduction: Legal Marijuana and Hashish in Italy
In recent years, the world of cannabis has experienced significant growth in Italy and many other states.
In our country everything was regulated by Law No. 242 of 2016, which allowed its cultivation and marketing, setting an overall THC limit of less than 0.6 percent.
Legalization has given rise to new products, all derived from the same plant but different from each other. The most confusing terms are definitely Marijuana and Hashish, many people think they are the same thing but that is not the case at all.
What is the Difference between Marijuana and Hashish?
Both are derived from the inflorescences of Hemp, within the latter we find all the substances and active ingredients that give Hemp its therapeutic and beneficial properties.
Specifically, Cannabis inflorescences contain two active ingredients:
- CBD
- THC
CBD is the non-psychoactive active ingredient known for multiple beneficial effects, including pain-relieving, antioxidant, antidepressant and anticonvulsant. Also useful for promoting sleep and appetite.
THC, on the other hand, contains the same capabilities as the former but causes an undesirable psychoactive side effect. This is why the distinction between legal and illegal Marijuana arises.
Hemp flowers also contain many other natural substances, including numerous cannabinoids, vitamins, terpenes, and flavonoids that make the Hemp plant so potent.
As we have seen, the moment Cannabis begins to flower, all energies are focused on the development of the Buds, which once dried are put on the market under the name of Marijuana, in our case Legal Marijuana.
Thus, when we talk about marijuana we are referring to the plant part of the plant, specifically the flowers.

Hashish, on the other hand, refers to trichomes, the extraction of which directly involves flowers.
The resin from the inflorescences (also called Kief) that accumulates during the development process is separated from the buds and its processing gives rise to Hashih.
Depending on the extraction procedure performed, there are different types of Hashish that are distinguished by hardness/pastiness and hue.
As we have seen, the real difference between Marijuana and Hashish lies in the extraction and subsequent processing, although the cultivation of the plant at the base is the same.
Are the effects of Marijuana and Hashish the same?
Hashish proves to be much more potent than Marijuana precisely because it is in the trichomes that the highest percentage of active ingredients are found.
As mentioned earlier, THC is the psychoactive active ingredient contained in marijuana, both legal and illegal. In Cannabis Light the percentage present is very low, not enough to cause side effects.
Marijuana has between 10 and 20 percent THC; Hashish can be as high as 60 percent.
For this reason, the effects of Hashish are much more intense.
